Dear Families, I am writing to share with you that we will soon begin the RSHP Education programme of Health and Well-being with Primary 1. There is a letter attached below for you to read about what your child will be learning about at school.
If you wish to find out more about how you can help at home, click the appropriate link below. In their first lesson they will be learning about their bodies. Best wishes, Miss Copeland
Hello! Our classroom is looking so beautiful with all of your work on the walls. Let’s have a look at some of our displays…
Our P1 Learning Heroes
Our Learning Heroes help to remind us that we need to use our superpowers when we are learning. Through the story of the Bear and Ellie, we learn about the heroes who can help us on our learning journey. To read the story, click the link below.
As you can see from our timetable below, we have outdoor learning on Tuesdays and Outdoor PE on Wednesdays. We are not getting changed for PE at the moment so please wear suitable clothes on these days. Please bring a warm waterproof coat every day as we may take our learning outside!
Maths
We want everyone to be able to count forwards and backwards to 20. Here are 2 videos that we like to bounce along to!
This week we have been talking about 2D shapes. We need to know the…
Name of the shape
How many corners it has
Sides – Are they curved? Straight? How many are there?
Try this at home!
Water bottles are a super fun way to take our learning outside! Making shapes and letters while squeezing and making our hands strong. Not to worry if you make a mistake as the sun will dry it all up ☀️
Phonics
This week we introduced the letters n and i. We now know 6 letters s,a,t,p,i,n. With these letters we can make lots of words!
When we put letters together, they make words. This is a key piece of understanding. Often these words follow the pattern Consonant, Vowel, Consonant. Like cat, tin or sit. These are called CVC words.
Blend
Can you blend the letters together to read these words?
Game
Try making a game like this at home. Can you get all the way around the board?
Try watching the videos below without sound. Can you read the words? Watch again with the sound. Did you get it right?
Writing
We have 3 steps in our writing
Think about what it is you want to write down. “I went to the park”. It has 5 words.
Write down the words or sounds you know. Leave a space in between words and put a full stop at the end.
Now we need to read what has been written.
Tricky Words
We also introduced our first tricky word this week… I. We use I a lot in our Monday writing diaries. “I went to the park”, “I did some shopping”, “I helped Dad”.
I is a tricky word because it cannot be ‘sounded out’. Tricky words are sometimes called ‘sight words’. It’s just a case of learn learn learn learning them. The video below is a catchy way to learn tricky words.
Class Representatives
Each class in the school has a set of class representatives; pupils who represent the class for different topics. The Pupil Council will meet with Mrs Jessop (Head Teacher) to make big decisions about the school. The Eco Rep will meet with Mr McPheely (P6) about recycling and looking after the planet. The HWB Rep will meet with Ms Finlayson (SFL) to talk about healthy brains and bodies (Health week) and the Art Rep will meet with Miss Kerr (P7) to talk about the yearly Art Gallery. Due to Covid, we are not yet sure how everyone will meet, but may I say a big well done to everyone who was brave and volunteered and congratulations to the pupils who were voted in!
Well done superstars! Have a lovely week, Miss Copeland
They are back! I am pleased to say that our very own super heroes are back in school helping us to be amazing learners – everyone using the power of YET as we find out and try out ways to learn and get smarter!
i am sure primary 7 will not mind me sharing this amazing display with you today!
I am looking forward to seeing every class’ display around school and shared with you all on the class blogs!
There are 3 parts of literacy; reading, writing and listening/talking. This week we have been exercising our ears, matching sounds to picture. Here are some listening games you can play at home.
“Read what I have written” was last week’s writing target. When writing, we first think about what we are about to write, we then try to write this down and finally, we read what we have written. This shows that we understand that we write so we can read, even if you don’t know how to spell something you just have a go!
We practised our letter formation using paint this week
Art and Science
We have been putting on our scientist hats and mixing colours together. We are learning that when you mix 2 colours together it makes a new colour.
We put one colour on each hand and then rubbed our hands together. Mixing 2 primary colours makes a secondary colour.
We mixed different coloured Play-dough to make new colours. We recorded what we found on the piece of paper.
We made a beautiful window display layering tissue paper of primary colours
We have been going outside on Tuesday afternoons with Mr Reed. Remember to always bring your coat to school as the weather is very changeable. You may wish to wear black or grey trousers on Tuesdays. This week we were learning some games and ball skills!
Fine motor skills
Fine motor skills help us tie our shoe laces, put up our hair, zip up our coats, hold and write with pencils and cut with scissors. We like threading beans and letters, and using big tweezers in our busy learning time.
