Primary 1 Blog

Monday 12th October

As you may know, last week was Profile Jotter Week. This means that every piece of work we did went into the same jotter. This creates a snapshot of your learning at school. Here are a few things we learnt this week…

Keeping Secrets

Sometimes when someone asks us to keep a secret, it is a bad thing. We get a funny ‘uh oh’ feeling in our tummies and we know it is wrong. If this happens, remember what Pantosaurus says. If someone says to…

…keep it secret then you must tell them “No!”
then go and find someone you trust and tell them straight away.
They’ll say “well done for speaking out” and make it all OK.

Look at our beautifully decorated pants!

Everyday Primary 1 chooses how they want to be welcomed into the classroom. Which one would you choose?

National Post Day

Some secrets feel good, like a surprise birthday cake or Christmas present. At school we have been keeping a good secret. We have secretly been designing and writing postcards this week which we delivered on Friday because it was National Post Day. We hope they will arrive at your houses today or tomorrow!

While we were delivering our postcards, we bumped into the Postal Worker who was emptying postbox! He had a special key which opened the door.

Outdoor Learning

This week we went on a Scavenger Hunt! We split into 2 teams and had to find all of the autumnal things on our list. We were so happy that we managed to find them all! We brought some of the things we found back to the classroom for our Tuff Tray. Can you see the nature face in the photo?

Patterns

This week we have been working on repeating patterns and growing patterns. Repeating patterns have a rule which repeats over and over again – staying the same. Growing patterns still have a rule but the rule makes the pattern bigger.

1,2,3,4,5,6 is a growing pattern as the rule is +1 and the numbers get bigger.
Using this pattern, we wrote on our whiteboards which number was missing from the pattern.

We are all the same, but different!

Unique, similar and different – RSHP

We played a game called That’s me too! Each pupil stood in front of the class and shared something that they like and everyone who also shared that β€˜like’ stood up and yelled, β€œThat’s me too!”. Everyone was so brave and we found out that everyone in our class likes such as teddies, popcorn, ice-cream, donuts, getting house points, flowers and playing hide and seek.

Everybody has different special qualities and these differences make us unique. There are parts of our body that are the same as others and parts that are different such as the colour of our hair, eyes and skin, the length of our hair and if we wear glasses or earrings. We are so fortunate to have so many unique and amazing pupils in our class.

Did you know in our class of 17 pupils we speak 10 different languages? We shared how to say hello in our home languages and some pupils even chose in their golden time to share this with others… “I’ll teach you how to speak in my language, and you can teach me yours!”. Keep being YOU because no one else can! ❀️

Reports and Parents Evenings

You will soon receive a formal report about your child’s progress and be given the offer of signing up for a short phone consultation. If you ever wish to share a query or comment, small or large throughout the year, remember you can pop me an email at admin@royalmile.edin.sch.uk or write in your child’s pink Reading Record. If you wish to look further ahead to what your child will be learning about for the rest of the term, have a look at our term 1 organiser.

Warm wishes, Miss Copeland

Homework – Thursday 8th October

Dear Primary 1 Families,

Today your child will have homework in their bag!

Their homework pack contains a reading folder (this is what we call the plastic wallet), their pink reading record, an Oxford Reading Tree (ORT) book and a matching homework sheet.

The pupils read at school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. On Thursday, they take their reading folders home to read with you and to complete their homework sheet over the weekend. The reading folder with record, book and completed homework sheet must be returned to school on Monday so the books can be quarantined.

There is space in the reading record to tick βœ“ that they have read, and space to write a comment. You can write any questions you have, any news that you think may effect your child (unwell relative, period of bad dreams or reason they were unable to complete the homework tasks) or simply a happy comment.

We do ask that you follow this simple hand washing routine when reading with your child to reduce the spread of germs.

This week your folders will contain 2 extra items; a loose Education City log-in detail slip to keep at home on the fridge (you may notice that another copy is stuck on the inside page of the reading record) and 3 pages of letter and ‘tricky words’ cards to also keep at home.

Education City Website: there are 6 tasks set for your child in their homework area. These should be completed by the end of the October holiday at the latest. Click the link here to go to the Education City Website.

Letter and Tricky Word Pages: These can be cut up and used as you like. I have included all of the letters and the first group of tricky words. So far, your child should know a, t, p, n, i , s, r, e, h and the tricky words I and the.

Here are a few ideas you can try with your letter cards

  • Try cutting them up and showing a letter. Ask “What is this letter sound?” (a is ‘ah‘) or “What is the name of this letter?” (a is ‘ay‘) – This video may help https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PmB3SIjNdQ
  • Try laying them out on a table and asking your child to “point to a”
  • Show a card, say it’s sound then hide it and ask your child to write it with a pencil, paintbrush, in sand or mud!
  • “Can you think of a word that starts with this letter sound?” (a for apple)
  • “Lets make a sentence together that starts with I” e.g. I went to the park. “How many words is that?”

As always, please send any queries to admin@royalmile.edin.sch.uk

Warm wishes, Miss Copeland

Outdoor Learning and Writing

Do you have a good imagination? We do! How many different things can you make a stick into? A sword, a horse, a magic wand? Weights to be lifted or a partner to dance with. Can you look at the photos and guess what we pretended our sticks were?

We voted on whose work should go on the website by putting bears on our favourites

Roman and Khadijah’s work
Andy and Mariam’s work.

This work was inspired by the book Not A Stick by Antoinette Portis. Read the book below!

Maths

“We done patterns. Patterns repeat”, Bryce.

We chose these ones for our website “because they are beautiful”, Rayan.

Scottish Maths Week Assembly

This week was Scottish Maths Week. We have been spotting shapes in our topic – Our community.

Can you spot any 2D shapes? Can you spot the places where people who help us work?

Well done to all of Primary 1 who helped make our amazing maths week poster. We chose to call it ‘Our Flat City‘ because we squished the 3D buildings into flat 2D shapes for our map. We each drew our own house and then added our favourite places like Edinburgh Castle, Arthur’s Seat, Tesco and McDonalds. We also added the places where people who help us work, like our school, the fire station, the police station, the doctors surgery and the dentist. A special well done to our brave speakers!

Rather than gathering in the hall, Assembly is now done virtually using a video platform called Microsoft Teams – The laptop is positioned below the iPad I am filming on – this is why the speakers are looking down πŸ™‚

Health and Wellbeing

This week we were learning about the ‘uh oh’ feeling you get in your tummy when you are worried, scared or sad. This ‘uh oh’ feeling helps to keep us safe.

Jessie and her friends like to watch videos on their devices like a tablet or phone, but what should they do if they see something scary that makes them feel worried, scared or sad? They should tell a grown up they trust!

This coming week…we will be talking PANTS with Pantosaurus!

Pantosaurus is the boss of his own body. He knows that what’s in your pants, belongs only to you because your pants cover up your private parts. Scroll down for the poster and song, or click the link below!

Monday 28th September – P1

Wow we squeezed in so much learning in our 4 day week. Have a look below to see what we have been up to…

Outdoor Learning with Mr Reid

We built nature faces πŸ™‚

We made a sandwich for a monster!

Benefits of Using Cloud With DevOps Services - DZone Cloud

We spotted pictures in the clouds

But Miss Copeland forgot to take a photograph of this so here’s one from the internet…

Writing

I love hearing all about what you do at home. In our writing we have been trying to include tricky words like The and I. Well done to Mohammad and Rayan who both used I in their independent writing this week!

P.E

On Wednesday afternoons we do P.E. We warmed up and stretched, then practised our throwing, catching and balancing with lots of different equipment!

Shapes

We have been practising drawing our 2D shapes with water and spotting 2D shapes in the faces of 3D shapes by printing

We have also been playing games where we have to count on. When we play our board games we roll the dice, add up the spots then count on the right amount of squares.

Domino/dice patterns – We need to learn that the pattern of the spots is a number. Can you watch the video below and shout out how many spots there are?

Big Deal and Little Deal

When we have a problem we ask “Is this a big deal or a little deal”

To read the story, click on the link below.

Me!

Once a month we draw a beautiful self portrait of ourselves. We think about the song ‘Heads, shoulders, knees and toes’ when we draw to make sure we have lots of detail. We also think about what we are wearing! Do you have a heart on your zip? A clip in your hair? Let’s put that in our pictures!

Washing our hands

Don’t forget to use soap when you wash your hands. It’s the soap, not the water that kills the nasty germs. Try the experiment below at home πŸ™‚
