Ted and Primary 1 went on an adventure to the Edinburgh City Children’s Library. P1 were super sensible on the long walk and did some very good listening too.

Making with playdough Drawing with pens, pencils, chalk and water bottles! Sorting due to their properties
We’ve been busy this week!
CVC word building
Choose a card, find the blocks and then spell the word. Some groups have even played ‘Be the teacher’ and tested each other! This activity has really helped us with sounding out the letters then blending them together to read the word.
Phoning the Emergency Services
When sharing stories about Fireworks Night, Primary 1 began our topic about People Who Help Us
“Phone 999” the class says. But how? With house phones being less popular, would your child know how to phone 999 on a locked smartphone? With no 9 button visible, this may be trickier than it sounds.
Do they know where the landline or mobile phone is kept in the house?
Do they know how to phone on a locked smartphone?
Do they know their home address?
Do they know how to unlock their door in an emergency?
Miss Aitken
We have also welcomed Miss Aitken a PGDE student at University of Edinburgh, into our P1 team. She will be supporting the class until the Christmas break.
Thank you for taking the time to read what we have been up to. Click reply to this post to say Hello!
Warm wishes, Miss Copeland, Mrs McGlashan, Miss Aitken and Miss Black
Today we are going to the Edinburgh Central Children’s Library!
Remember your waterproof coat and nice strong shoes.
Homework
Reading folders go home on a Thursday and should return to school on Mondays please.
Education City is also part of P1 Homework.
Well Done to ⭐MASON⭐ who had completed all of his tasks.
New Education City tasks are published on Mondays each week.
Your Education City details are stuck on the inside page of your reading folder and you have all received a print out to take home. Please email admin if you need your child’s login and password.
Maths – Shape
This week we have been talking about 2D shapes. We need to know the…
Name of the shape
How many corners it has
Sides – Are they curved? Straight? How many are there?
Try this at home!
Water bottles/old squeezy sauce bottles are a super fun way to take our learning outside! Making shapes and letters while squeezing and making our hands strong. Not to worry if you make a mistake as the sun will dry it all up ☀️
Class Representatives
Each class in the school has a set of class representatives; pupils who represent the class for different topics. The Pupil Council will meet with Mrs Henry (Head Teacher) to make big decisions about the school.
Well done to everyone who put their name forward to be in with a chance. Congratulations to Amina who was voted our P1 Pupil Council Representative. Big thumbs up to Jack who is our Vice Pupil Council Representative and will step in on days if Amina is not at school.
This week we will also be voting in…
Health and Well-Being Representative will meet with Ms Finlayson (SFL) and Mr Madine (P3) to talk about healthy brains and bodies (Health Week including Sports Day)
Art Representative will meet with Miss Kerr (P7) to talk about the yearly Art Gallery.
P.E – Racket skills – Tennis
Balancing and bouncing bean bags and balls! We have been strengthening our arms and core in order to hold a tennis racket. Lots of concentrating going on below… and lots of fun!
Pumpkin Art – Yayoi Kusama
Primary 1 chose to focus on pumpkins for their Halloween inspired art this week. First we listened to the story of Yayoi’s life
We then had a look at her artwork
… and had a go ourselves! We used our fine motor skills and team work to cover the pumpkins in spot stickers. We learnt how to draw a pumpkin like Yayoi. We then used kitchen rolls, Lego and fingers to print patterns for the background. Finally we used 3 different implements to create large, medium and small spots for our pumpkins. Don’t they look fabulous!

Dress Down Day
Many thanks to the Parent Council who provided each pupil with an exciting bag of Halloween Treats. A big THANK YOU thumbs up from Primary 1!
Hello, I hope you all had a lovely holiday and enjoy your day off today. We have 8 weeks until Christmas holidays and lots of fun experiences coming up!
Dress Down Day
This FRIDAY is our dress down day. You may dress up for Halloween or wear non-school uniform. Sometimes Halloween costumes can be scary. Costumes from films or games should be suitable for the age of the pupil. If you would like some support with a Halloween outfit, please let P1 staff know so we can help. We are very excited!
National Poetry Day
7th October was National Poetry Day. We enjoyed hearing a few poems and playing the game taught to us by author Simon Mole below! Inspired by Simon Mole, we created our own class poem called Dream Day. We then each had a go at writing our own ones. Being creative and imaginative in our writing can help us develop a joy of writing!
Maths – Time Topic
This week we had two focusses. We were developing our knowledge of the days of the week further by using the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar and sorting the days and the food he ate. We also learnt about how you can see time passing through looking at the trees. This helped us learn about the 4 seasons.
Colour
We have enjoyed reading the book The Colour Monster throughout our first term. At the beginning, the colour monster is ‘all mixed up’ so we sort his feelings into 6 different jars. Listen to the story below.
We ‘check in’ our feelings every morning and can move our peg throughout the day to share how we are feeling.
Check out our Colour display below
Community classrooms
We loved having the Primary 7s come visit us and teach us all about place value. Well done to the P7s for teaching us such a tricky topic and well done to Primary 1 who listened so intently!
Thank you for taking the time to look at our blog.
We now know 6 letters s,a,t,p,i,n. With these letters we can make lots of words!
When we put letters together, they make words. This is a key piece of understanding. Often these words follow the pattern Consonant, Vowel, Consonant. Like cat, tin or sit. These are called CVC words.
Blend
Can you blend the letters together to read these words?
Game
Try making a game like this at home. Can you get all the way around the board?
Try watching the videos below without sound. Can you read the words? Watch again with the sound. Did you get it right?
Writing
We have 3 steps in our writing
Think about what it is you want to write down. “I went to the park”. It has 5 words.
Write down the words or sounds you know. Leave a space in between words and put a full stop at the end.
Now we need to read what has been written Then… repeat!
Red Words
Red words are also know as tricky words because they cannot be ‘sounded out’. It’s just a case of learn learn learn learning them. The video below is a catchy way to learn red words. We often learn new red words when writing about our weekends, “I went to the park.” , “I went to the swimming pool.”
Choosing
Primary 1 are given lots of independent time called ‘choosing’, where they can choose which area of our classroom to explore. Our ice-cream shop was a huge hit this week. As you can see, pupils were very engaged, practising their fine motor skills, communication and space sharing, making lots of delicious ice creams of many flavours to sell. Our construction area is always popular and P1 are showing some fantastic creativity, planning and problem solving.
Education City
Well done to those who have completed their EducationCity.com homework. Your password has also been stuck on the inside page of your reading folders. Please contact the school if you require your login details again. There will be new tasks scheduled every Monday.
