It has been Profile Jotter week this week! We have been working diligently to put our work into these jotters and look forward to eventually showing these off to you.
In Numeracy, we continue to work on numbers before, after and between as well as working on our Number of the Day. We looked at ‘missing’ numbers in addition sums too. The children enjoyed this number bonds game to help us with number facts and fluency: https://pbskids.org/curiousgeorge/busyday/ten/
We are continuing to work with Read Write Inc., reviewing our sounds, working to read and write using our sounds and to read our tricky words too. We were using our reading skills to read the words in this game and decide if they were real or fake words.
We also looked at this video about the Giant’s Causeway and how it was made by volcanoes. We listened to the legend of Finn McCool and his encounter with Benandonner which led to the creation of the Giant’s Causeway. The children particularly enjoyed this animated short about the story! We wrote a personal response to share our thoughts on this story about the Giant’s Causeway.
We start homework this week! We have a Building Resilience homework assigned this week which can come in for the 8th of October, the Literacy and Maths homework should be completed for this Thursday, the 30th of September.
General homework for 27th September 2021
Reading – Reading books will go out on Thursday, please ensure you return your reading books on Monday 4th October.
Literacy – Look in your child’s orange homework jotter. This week your child has been asked to ‘Be the Teacher‘ with their sounds with you. Take a couple of minutes each night to test each other on the consonants in the Speed Sounds Chart on the first page. Encourage your child to say the sounds and ‘be the teacher’ with you. Take turns in pointing to the different letters and using their sound. This video can help you with the sounds.
Maths – Please try to log in to Education City. There will be a Homework for you. Have a go at no more than two activities from the assigned homework. The log in information for both Education City and Active Learn should be on the inside cover of your child’s orange homework jotter.
A guide to logging in to both sites should be in your child’s homework pack. If you have any issues logging in please let Mrs Aylward know. An electronic version of the guides can be found here:
We are all likely to experience ups and downs in life. We can’t always predict what life throws at us. However there are things that can help us to deal with challenges and setbacks, and even learn and grow as a result.
In this unit, we are covering: – Everyone goes through ups and downs in their life – Resilient people cope better with difficulties – I can learn to be more resilient
We start the Be Resilient unit this term. Please complete the Home Task to be handed in by the 8th of October.
Home Task First Level (P2–P4) Think about someone that inspires you – perhaps a parent, your class teacher, grandma or a neighbour (or a character from a book or film, or someone famous). Find out about a time they found challenging and what they did to overcome it. What things did they do to help them cope? Create a poster with the ideas you come up with.
Here are the electronic files for this Home Task, one is a leaflet overview for parents and the other file is the Home Task as described above.
Please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Aylward if you have any questions. If it is easier, the admin email account will forward any emails marked for my attention or otherwise let me know if you have phoned in to contact me.
Homework
Homework will officially resume next week, spelling and maths homework will go out on Mondays to return on Thursdays and reading books will go out on Fridays to be returned on Mondays. You should expect a thick polythene bag with your child’s orange homework jotter in a poly-pocket on Mondays, this jotter will be swapped out for their reading book and Reading Record on a Thursday.
In conjunction with this, please do let me know if you have any issues logging in to Education City or Active Learn from next week. Paper copies of some guides for logging in to Education City and Active Learn will go home this Monday the 27th of September.
P.E. and clothing
P.E. will be in the afternoon on Mondays and Thursdays. Please ensure your child has a P.E. kit with them on these days. This can stay in school and go home for washing as required.
Please ensure all your child’s clothing can be identified and has their name somewhere on their personal items. It would help to ensure that your child has suitable clothing on which will make changing in and out of P.E. kit easier – such as wearing socks over tights or a polo shirt over a shirt on these days.
In general, your child should come to school in weather-appropriate gear and clothing for where we will take advantage of outdoor learning opportunities in addition to outdoor P.E. and playtimes.
Snacks and water bottles
Please ensure your child has a healthy snack for breaktimes. A water bottle for daily use, with their name on, should also be sent in where possible and we encourage the children to drink *water* in school unless special circumstances apply.
Star of the Week
Star of the Week will start back for Primary 2 next week. Our Star of the Week will be announced on a Friday with Rainbow going home for the weekend to come back on Monday, ready to share some of the fun they had together!
P2 Blog posts
A homework post will go out on Monday for a general homework that week. Please do check your child’s bag for their homework on Mondays.
P2 will have a weekly review posted on Fridays from now on, in the meantime please enjoy a snapshot of some of our experiences so far!
We looked at old and modern toys as we began to explore our understanding of the past in advance of our work on Castles. We had a go at making a cup and ball! We have been revising our number and letter formation as well as reviewing our sounds in our literacy. We have been playing games, working with partners and writing in both numeracy and literacy. We have been practising our counting on and back and starting to look at ways we can make and show our numbers as we revise and explore our number skills. You can also see us working on our balances as we start gymnastics in P.E.
We have been working to use (most!) of our senses to explore our environment and the season of Autumn. We used our senses of sight, touch, smell and hearing while outside in the playground, below are some of the photos we took while exploring. We will continue to explore the changing season as we head towards winter and shorter days.
We have been looking at kindness and respect as part of our Health and Wellbeing work to date and the children enjoyed seeing this video about kindness which we had seen before in P1. They were keen to have this on the blog to share with you!
We will have a homework post on the blog on Monday as we start homework up next week and also work to share our learning in our Profile Jotters. We look forward to sharing some of our work on this blog next week so please do check in regularly! Have a fantastic weekend!
