Literacy

There are 3 parts of literacy; reading, writing and listening/talking. This week we have been exercising our ears, matching sounds to picture. Here are some listening games you can play at home.

  1. Match the sound to the animal https://www.phonicsbloom.com/uk/game/match-sounds?phase=1
  2. Which animal is behind the door? https://www.phonicsbloom.com/uk/game/whats-behind-the-door?phase=1
  3. Match the sound to the animal to reveal a picture http://www.literactive.com/Download/live.asp?swf=story_files/match_the_sounds_US.swf
  4. Match the cans that make the same sound http://www.literactive.com/Download/live.asp?swf=story_files/Listen_And_Match_US.swf
  5. Find the word that starts with the same sound http://www.literactive.com/Download/live.asp?swf=story_files/easel_US.swf

Writing

“Read what I have written” was last week’s writing target. When writing, we first think about what we are about to write, we then try to write this down and finally, we read what we have written. This shows that we understand that we write so we can read, even if you don’t know how to spell something you just have a go!

We practised our letter formation using paint this week

Art and Science

We have been putting on our scientist hats and mixing colours together. We are learning that when you mix 2 colours together it makes a new colour.

We put one colour on each hand and then rubbed our hands together. Mixing 2 primary colours makes a secondary colour.

We mixed different coloured Play-dough to make new colours. We recorded what we found on the piece of paper.

We made a beautiful window display layering tissue paper of primary colours

Here is a fun colour mixing game you could play at home! http://d3tt741pwxqwm0.cloudfront.net/KET/evlearnket/Creating-Colors3/index.html

Outdoor Learning

We have been going outside on Tuesday afternoons with Mr Reed. Remember to always bring your coat to school as the weather is very changeable. You may wish to wear black or grey trousers on Tuesdays. This week we were learning some games and ball skills!

Fine motor skills

Fine motor skills help us tie our shoe laces, put up our hair, zip up our coats, hold and write with pencils and cut with scissors. We like threading beans and letters, and using big tweezers in our busy learning time.

Have a lovely week! Miss Copeland

Monday 7th September

Hello! I am so glad that everyone is feeling better. It has been lovely having everyone back in this week! Let’s see what we have been getting up to…

Maths

We have been…

  • Counting amounts of items up to 20
  • Matching the amount to the numeral (**** = 4)
  • Counting forwards to 20 and backwards from 10
  • Doubles using our hands (to 10)

Here are some free maths games that you could play at home

Literacy

What is Phonics?

In phonics lessons we learn that a written letter has a matching sound and name. Here is a video showing the name and sounds for the alphabet.

Letter actions

Last week we introduced two letters; a and t. We use Jolly Phonics songs to learn a story and action for each letter sound. See if you can do the sound and action at home. Soon we will know S, A, T, P, I and N. With these 6 letters we can spell lots of words!

Writing letters

At the beginning, you may find that your child can draw the letters but in a different way. An a, for example, can be drawn as a circle with a tail. Although it may have the same outcome, forming the letters as we ask is very important as it will help your child when they come to joining letters together.

Try making your letters in lots of different ways; Outside with sticks and flowers, with Lego, with salt, shaving foam, sprinkles, rice, Playdough, sand…

We have started reading books!

As a whole class, we are reading wordless picture books. We learn that stories have characters and that they have a beginning, middle and end. Here are some of the characters we will see in our stories

Clipart Oxford Reading Tree
The Oxford Reading Tree (ORT) main characters.

You can read some wordless stories together at home by signing up to a free Oxford Owl account. Once you have signed up, you will be able to read the story below called The Haircut. https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/api/digital_books/1408.html

It is important that when you are reading together, you feel that you can talk in whichever language you and your child feels most comfortable in.

Our Everywhere Bear

Rainbow is Primary 1’s Everywhere Bear.

Rainbow goes home with the Star of the Week every Thursday and comes back to school on Monday where it will be quarantined ready for it’s next trip!

We voted to decide what we should call it.

Listen to the story below to find out what happened to Class 1’s Everywhere Bear!

If, due to Covid, you do not wish to take the fluffy bear home, please let me know so we can arrange for a laminated photo to come home instead.

I wonder who will be our star of the week and get to take Rainbow home..?

Health and Well-Being in Primary 7

Primary 7 have been reflecting on the changes that have occurred over the past 6 months. We discussed how although we have all be subject to the same restrictions, our experiences will vary between each individual. Along with talking through our feelings, we decided to express them using inspiration from different artists. We thoroughly enjoyed creating our work and we hope that you enjoy the final product!

First of all, we reflected on the surreal experience that was lock down. There were many different aspects, some of which we enjoyed and some not so much! Inspired by the art of Rene Magritte, we designed a piece of surrealism of our own.

Thereafter, we spoke about the losses and changes that were caused by the lock down. We imagined ourselves as boats in a storm and thought about the tool kits of resilience which we have to support us in times of change and uncertainty. Inspired by the art of Joseph Mallord William Turner, we painted our ships in the storm of change.

Finally, we spoke of the positive changes taking place and those we hoped for in the future. We likened this to the season of Spring and how new changes bring hope. We reflected that change is an inevitable part of life and we have all faced a huge change which we have experienced in our own ways. Inspired by the artist, Claude Monet, we painted and created our visions of Spring and hope.
