Block Play

Sorting colours, balancing, stacking and building.

Mark Making

Self directed writing, letter learning and practising writing our names and numbers.

Patterns

Patterns repeat with a rule. We have been focussing on two step colour rules such as red, yellow, red, yellow. Can you spot any patterns at home? Maybe you could make one with Lego, sweeties or paint?

Picasso Study

Primary 1 looked at the changes in Pablo Picasso’s self portraits as he got older. We shared our opinions, sometimes we felt happy, sometimes confused, and sometimes we found the pictures silly. We are all entitled to our own opinions. After seeing all of the pictures, we each added a star on to our favourite one. Isn’t it interesting how we all had different favourites? Some of us then chose to make a self portrait in the style of Picasso’s cubism period. We were practising our choice, cutting, sticking and painting skills during this task. Look out for our final art gallery. To quote Picasso, “Every child is an artist”.

Colour Mixing

Primary 1 had great fun mixing paint on their hands!

Try playing this colour mixing game at home

Play2Learn Football Coaching

You can see we looked so happy during this fun 1 hour session with Play2Learn. A big THANK YOU for coming in!

Self Directed Learning

Reading, imaginative play, role play. Primary 1 particularly enjoyed playing the ‘roll an emotion’ game with our Colour Monster dice.

Mental Agility

Attached below are some activities you may wish to practise at home to support counting forwards and backwards.

Skipper and the Building Resilience programme

Last week we had the first Skipper Assembly of the new school year, led by our support for learning teacher, Ms Finlayson. Click here to learn more about Skipper.

UNCRC Rights of the Child

We asked the class what we should/shouldn’t do to help make Primary 1 a ‘good’ class to be in and these are the comments we collected

  • Be kind – Mohammed
  • No kicking or fighting –
  • No punching – Lola
  • Eat vegetables – Mustapha
  • Have a good time – Clay
  • Play nicely – Mustapha
  • Share – Lola
  • Listen to each other – Eddy
  • No being loud –
  • Eat fruit – Lola

From this we matched 4 rights – The right to be safe, healthy, to play and to learn.

Our school values were created in collaboration with pupils, parents, staff and school community. Below is the Primary 1 display representing these.

Block Play

At Royal Mile we believe block play is a fantastic learning resource for developing skills across the curriculum. Block play can help develop vocabulary when working collaboratively with friends. Pupils can create patterns, develop gross and fine motor skills. It’s open ended nature allows for endless creativity. To learn more about it’s value, click here. We are privileged to have construction materials of all sizes to explore at our school!

Can you spot who has made a see-saw? Who is eating a burger in bed? Who has made stairs? Who is riding a robot horse? Who has blasters?

The Colour Monster

  • Learning to draw the colour monster
  • Sorting and naming colours
  • Using facial expressions/body language to depict an emotion

Phonics

In phonics lessons we learn that a written letter has a matching sound and name. Here is a video showing the name and sounds for the alphabet.

Letter Learning

We follow a programme called Read, Write, Inc.

Last week, we learnt the letters m and a. As you see below, each letter has a rhyme that helps when forming the letters.

You can play the Doorway Online game below to practice your letter formation

https://www.doorwayonline.org.uk/activities/letterformation/

If you wish to quickly hear how to pronounce the pure sounds of letters, click on each letter in the website here

Identifying different sounds is a key foundation for phonic learning. Try playing these fun games at home

What animal is behind the door?

Match the sounds to the picture

Numeracy

To support our number skills, each month the whole school focusses in on one colour of the Mental Agility Rainbow. We have started the year on the red section of the rainbow – counting forwards and backwards. We try to embed these activities within our day such as singing songs such as 10 Green Bottles and counting how many pupils are lined up. We have also been completing Join The Dots pictures, jumping along our number line/rug and playing Number Tennis.

Here are two songs we really enjoy!

Our First Week

Our Everywhere Bear

Primary 1 all shared a name suggestion. We then voted for our favourite name. The name which had the most votes was…

Rainbow!

Our Everywhere Bear goes home with the Star of the Week on Friday.
Rainbow has a diary in which you can write, draw or add photos of the real or imaginary adventures you go on.
On Monday they can share what they have done together.

To hear the story The Every Bear by Julia Donaldson, please click the video below.

Book Box

Every Friday Primary 1 visit the Book Box.
Pupils are free to choose any book and read, look at the pictures, and talk about the book in a language that they feel comfortable in.
We swap these every FRIDAY.
We also welcome donations of books which you think would be suitable.

Snack

Please provide one snack for your child which they can easily eat in the playground at breaktime. A whole piece of fruit is ideal.

Indoor Shoes

Indoor shoes are needed to keep the classrooms clean and to provide a dry pair of shoes for wetter days. We recommend Velcro indoor and outdoor shoes for P1 pupils, unless they are able to do up laces independently.

Coats

Please always send a waterproof coat with your child. We are an all weather school and will go into the playground for both lessons and play regardless of the changeable Scottish weather!

Best Start Grant School Age Payment applications are now open for children who were born between 1 March 2017 and 28 February 2018. The one-off payment of £267.65 per child helps families with the costs associated with a child starting at Primary School. People who get tax credits or certain benefits are encouraged to apply before the window closes on 28 February 2023. Eligibility is based on age and relates to when a child is first old enough to start school. Parents or carers who have deferred their child’s entry to school from August 2022 to August 2023, or those home schooling, must still apply before the closing date or they will lose out on their payment. For more information about how to apply see Best Start Grant and Best Start Foods

STEM – Land Yacht Building

First we designed what a half boat-half car would look like. We then went on to choose the body, wheels and sail that we wanted. Next came the trial and error – do we need to change any part of it? Once they were happy with how it moved, some pupils added decoration before taking them to test outside in the playground. Luckily it was a very windy day!

Thank you to Generation Science for providing the resources!
