Our First Week

Our Everywhere Bear

Primary 1 all shared a name suggestion. We then voted for our favourite name. The name which had the most votes was…

Rainbow!

Our Everywhere Bear goes home with the Star of the Week on Friday.
Rainbow has a diary in which you can write, draw or add photos of the real or imaginary adventures you go on.
On Monday they can share what they have done together.

Book Box

Every Friday Primary 1 visit the Book Box.
Pupils are free to choose any book and read, look at the pictures, and talk about the book in a language that they feel comfortable in.
We swap these every FRIDAY.
We also welcome donations of books which you think would be suitable.

Snack

Please provide one snack for your child which they can easily eat in the playground at breaktime. A whole piece of fruit is ideal.

Indoor Shoes

Indoor shoes are needed to keep the classrooms clean and to provide a dry pair of shoes for wetter days. We recommend Velcro indoor and outdoor shoes for P1 pupils, unless they are able to do up laces independently.

Coats

Please always send a waterproof coat with your child. We are an all weather school and will go into the playground for both lessons and play regardless of the changeable Scottish weather!

The Bookworm by Debi Gliori is the story all nursery settings in Edinburgh City Council used to support children with their transition. We will continue discuss this book during the first weeks of P1. We hope this will help them to feel comfortable in their new setting.

Yasmin our school nurse will be in school next Thursday 25th August 2022 for our Primary one families at 9.15am. You are welcome to pop into school and have a chat/discussion with her. It would also be a great opportunity for you to meet other parents. Coffee/tea will be available from 9.00am.

Best Start Grant School Age Payment applications are now open for children who were born between 1 March 2017 and 28 February 2018. The one-off payment of £267.65 per child helps families with the costs associated with a child starting at Primary School. People who get tax credits or certain benefits are encouraged to apply before the window closes on 28 February 2023. Eligibility is based on age and relates to when a child is first old enough to start school. Parents or carers who have deferred their child’s entry to school from August 2022 to August 2023, or those home schooling, must still apply before the closing date or they will lose out on their payment. For more information about how to apply see Best Start Grant and Best Start Foods

STEM – Land Yacht Building

First we designed what a half boat-half car would look like. We then went on to choose the body, wheels and sail that we wanted. Next came the trial and error – do we need to change any part of it? Once they were happy with how it moved, some pupils added decoration before taking them to test outside in the playground. Luckily it was a very windy day!

Thank you to Generation Science for providing the resources!

Museum on the Mound

On Wednesday, Primary 1 visited the Museum on the Mound, AKA the money museum for an end of topic trip. We must say a huge thank you to the staff there who led such engaging activities. Primary 1 learnt about the different security details in bank notes and created their own with holographic stickers, embossing, UV writing, date stamps and their own bank name. They were able to strike their own coin using a template and hammer, and see lots of interesting artefacts such as safe keys, the watchman’s chair and tried to crack a safe. Well done to Primary 1 who walked up and down the Royal Mile very sensibly, despite how busy it was with tourists!

Alien Words

Primary 1 have been reading all types of words this week. Reading alien words is a great way to check phonic skills. Could you read quap, shoj or pluv?

Play the game below by reading the word and deciding if it is a real word (Astronaut) or fake word (alien word)

Dance

We have been exploring dances from around the world. We have noticed different beats, instruments in the music and actions for each.

From voting we found out that Bollywood was the most popular dance with our class with comments such as “I like the Bollywood music”, “I like the beat” and “I like the actions”.

Electricity and energy

Primary 1 investigated what makes toys ‘go’ and created their own wind up spinners while learning about energy. We had so much fun we forgot to take photos!

Explore the website below to find out about different types of energy and electrical safety.
