P1 – Monday 25th October

Hello, I hope you all had a lovely holiday and enjoy your day off today. We have 8 weeks until Christmas holidays and lots of fun experiences coming up!

Dress Down Day

This FRIDAY is our dress down day. You may dress up for Halloween or wear non-school uniform. Sometimes Halloween costumes can be scary. Costumes from films or games should be suitable for the age of the pupil. If you would like some support with a Halloween outfit, please let P1 staff know so we can help. We are very excited!

National Poetry Day

7th October was National Poetry Day. We enjoyed hearing a few poems and playing the game taught to us by author Simon Mole below! Inspired by Simon Mole, we created our own class poem called Dream Day. We then each had a go at writing our own ones. Being creative and imaginative in our writing can help us develop a joy of writing!

Maths – Time Topic

This week we had two focusses. We were developing our knowledge of the days of the week further by using the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar and sorting the days and the food he ate. We also learnt about how you can see time passing through looking at the trees. This helped us learn about the 4 seasons.

Colour

We have enjoyed reading the book The Colour Monster throughout our first term. At the beginning, the colour monster is ‘all mixed up’ so we sort his feelings into 6 different jars. Listen to the story below.

We ‘check in’ our feelings every morning and can move our peg throughout the day to share how we are feeling.

Community classrooms

We loved having the Primary 7s come visit us and teach us all about place value. Well done to the P7s for teaching us such a tricky topic and well done to Primary 1 who listened so intently!

Colour

We have been learning about primary colours and secondary colours.

Practise at home: Play this fun game and paint the picture by mixing colours.

Number

We want everyone to be able to count forwards and backwards to 20. Here are 2 videos that we like to bounce along to!

Phonics

We now know 6 letters s,a,t,p,i,n. With these letters we can make lots of words!

When we put letters together, they make words. This is a key piece of understanding. Often these words follow the pattern Consonant, Vowel, Consonant. Like cat, tin or sit. These are called CVC words.

Writing

We have 3 steps in our writing

  1. Think about what it is you want to write down. “I went to the park”. It has 5 words.
  2. Write down the words or sounds you know. Leave a space in between words and put a full stop at the end.
  3. Now we need to read what has been written
    Then… repeat!

Red Words

Red words are also know as tricky words because they cannot be ‘sounded out’. It’s just a case of learn learn learn learning them. The video below is a catchy way to learn red words. We often learn new red words when writing about our weekends, “I went to the park.” , “I went to the swimming pool.”

Choosing

Primary 1 are given lots of independent time called ‘choosing’, where they can choose which area of our classroom to explore. Our ice-cream shop was a huge hit this week. As you can see, pupils were very engaged, practising their fine motor skills, communication and space sharing, making lots of delicious ice creams of many flavours to sell. Our construction area is always popular and P1 are showing some fantastic creativity, planning and problem solving.
