Home Learning

On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, school will be closed. This is due to strikes by UNISON members.

As teachers are not part of these strikes, home learning will be posted each day on your class blog at 9:00.

Below is a document explaining the format of each day.

We have aimed to support pupil routine by creating a timetable very similar to our school day. We hope by being consistent across the school, this will support families whom may be working together or sharing resources.

We look forward to welcoming you back to school on Friday, when pupils can share the learning that has been completed at home and we can celebrate their achievements.

Place Value arrow cards represent numbers in expanded notation. The cards overlap to form multi-digit numbers.

and Ten frames – to help develop a strong number sense! Ten frames are very useful in helping learners visualise numbers and build a good understanding of the relationships between numbers.

allowing the learners to understand the relationship between the different columns on a place value grid:

using a variety of resources to identify, write and partition numbers up to 1 000 000 including Place value charts to help find the place value of each digit based on its position in a number.

using Place value discs including decimal numbers to tenths.

Place value disks help learners compare the value of each place, like that the tens place is ten times the ones place.

focusing on rounding to 2 decimal places.

P3 News from the week.

P3 have had a busy week with Math, Literacy, RME and a visit to the Museum of Scotland. This week in math we have covered time; o’clock and half past and we have continued to look at Place Value that is linked to the Mental Math Strategies. Although it was a short week we have continued to focus in Literacy on our sounds and patterns in class. In Word Boost we discussed and read the Obvious Elephant by Bruce Robinson that reminded us about our Class Charter and Respect values in school and how we are all working towards being Kind to each other and listening to everyone’s voice and opinions in class. Linked to this in class we have started to discuss the UN Rights of The Child and have focused for the last few weeks on Article 12 of the Rights.

In Religious and Moral Education we have been discussing what we know about Hinduism and what we would like to learn about this world religion. We will be focusing on different aspects of this world religion over the year and are going to look at the stories and festivals that are linked to the Hindu religion.

P3 enjoyed a trip to the Scottish Museum this week and we were given access to the Viking artifact boxes that the museum hold in their education resource department. We looked at replicas of artifacts that Vikings used in their daily life and when invading, settling and trading with other countries. We were able to compare some of the artifacts to what we use in our daily life and discuss if anything was the same or different.

P3 will have home learning sent home on Monday, it will be a book to read for pleasure, a math challenge and a grid of activities on their Viking topic that they can try at home for the next few weeks. I will also place copies of the home learning on the blog. Please return the bag to school on a Friday and home learning will be checked and shared with the class and books can be exchanged. Next week the school will be closed for three days due to Industrial Action but home learning (math, literacy, health and well-being and topic) will be placed on the P3 blog each day for you to access and for the children to complete.

Primary 3 Term Overview and News

Welcome everyone to the Primary 3 Blog for 2023-2024. It has been a hectic start to the school term but we are up and running. We have been out on a walk to Dunbar’s Close and we will be taking lots of opportunities to be out and about in our local community over the coming year. We have opportunities to visit the Museum on the Mound to talk about money in the Math Week, we will be visiting the Poetry Library to share poems and we are hoping to go to the Museum on Scotland to complete our Viking Topic. All of this will be before the end of term.

It was lovely to have so many parents visit the classroom at Meet the Teacher and we loved singing to you and showing how we do our spelling. We hope to share more of our learning over the year and will take every opportunity to show you our learning.

Homework will be issued after the September Holiday and it will be on the blog and issued in the school bags on Monday to be returned on Friday. It will consist of literacy and math that has been covered over the week. I encourage you try the homework and when it is returned on a Friday the children will be responsible for self correction.

I would like to remind you of the following which helps your child in class. As the classroom can be very hot please try and provide a water bottle, (water only) as juice can be very sticky. Please could you send in a PE kit that can stay in school as we have PE three times a week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) the kit will be sent home to be washed during the holidays. Please could you provide a pair of indoor shoes as we get nearer winter and the rain is quite heavy it is good to have a change of shoes.

Ten Frames

Ten-Frames are two-by-five rectangular frames into which counters are placed to illustrate numbers less than or equal to ten. Below are two ways to use them; five-wise patterns, where you fill the top row before adding to the bottom; and pair-wise patterns, where you build up in groups of two.

Pupils will develop the ability to look at a ten frame instantly recognise how many counters there are without needing to count. This is called subitising.

Pupils will also be able to explain their answer.

“There are five because the top row is filled.”
“There are ten because both rows are filled.”
“There are nine because there is one gap. Ten minus one is nine.”
“There are four because two and two makes four.”

It is very important for pupils to be able to visually recognise numbers to 10 in many ways.
