Egg-citing News in P1!

Primary 1 were shocked to come back from lunch on Tuesday to find the classroom cordoned off. Mrs Henry explained that she didn’t know what made the mess, but that she found a box in her room which may have something to do with it…

When we opened it up we found an… egg!

There was also a scroll in it which stated that Primary 1 is to look after it until further notice…

Davie the Janitor checked the ‘CCTV’ and found that a dinosaur had been in our classroom!

Egg-citing Experiment!

We investigated the effects of different drinks on eggs, imagining they were our teeth!
We predicted which ones will be ‘good’ and ‘bad’ and what we think would happen to each one.

4 days later, on the last day of term, we observed the differences in the eggs.

  • “The vinegar one is squishy” Aiden
  • “The water one feels smooth and hard, normal” Lola
  • [The diluting juice one is] “squishy, bumpy, rough” Eddy
  • “The milk is smooth and hard” Mohamed
  • [The coffee one is] “hard and and turned brown” Jana
  • [The Cola one] “turned brown, hard, smooth” Sarah
  • [The orange juice one is] “cracked, bumpy, hard, sandy” Aiden

Primary 1 sorted the drinks into ‘good drinks’ and ‘bad drinks’ for our teeth. (Excuse the cracked water one!)


Numeracy

When looking at combining and partitioning, we are aiming to teach the place value of numbers, not simply ‘adding’.

The 5 in the number below is actually worth 50, whereas the 4 is worth 4, because of it’s place in the number.

Additionally, when adding 100, 20 and 8 we do not get 100208. We need to layer the numbers on top of each other to get 128.

This Week primary 1 are working on Number Bonds

How many different ways can you make the number 5 using two hands?

0+5, 1+4, 2+3, 3+2, 4+1, 5+0

Can you use resources to write sums to make the number 10?

These are number bonds. Primary 1 will be needing to recall their number bonds to 10 quickly. This is a key skill.

Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel 2023

Hello everyone,

What a fantastic fortnight of keeping active and trying hard to come to school by walking, scooting or cycling!

All our journeys have been submitted and the results are:

Regional position for small schools in Scotland, we ranked 21st!

Out of all the Edinburgh schools that entered, we came 2nd!

Overall position for all small schools in the UK, with 700+ schools entering, we ranked 83rd!

That is a great achievement and well done to all the learners plus parents and carers for supporting this initiative.

Continue to keep active and hope everyone has a fun filled Spring break!

The BIG Easter Post!

It has been a very busy term for us! Here are some of the things we have been up to…

Maths – Data Handling

We have been collecting data and displaying it as Pictographs.

Pictographs need…

  • Title
  • Key
  • Pictures! (data)

We used sticky notes to represent each person in the class. We can now use the pictograph to write statements.

  • Pink is the most popular colour.
  • Yellow is the least popular colour.
  • There were 13 children in the class.
  • Two more children chose green than yellow.
  • three less children chose orange than pink.

Numeracy

We have been using our fingers to support subtraction/take away. Sometimes we call this ‘counting back’. This means that we start at a number and we count backwards until we find the difference.

You could also try and make an adding machine at home!

PANTS

Through the Scottish RSHP programme we learn the names for the body parts including penis and vulva. This is important so we all have same vocabulary for if things are hurting or if they need to share information with us. We also learn the NSPCC’s PANTS rule.

PANTS stands for…
Privates are private.
Always remember your body belongs to you.
No means no.
Talk about secrets that upset you.
Speak up, someone can help.

Through discussing this, we aim to teach our pupils the following…

  • Consent and your child’s right to say no regarding their body.
  • Who your child can turn to if they ever feel upset or worried.

“Pants cover up your private parts”
“Pants cover up your vulva”
“Pants cover up your penis”
“You can go in a private place so nobody sees your private parts if you need a wee”
“We close the door when we go to the toilet”
“Someone might need to ask to see it if it is hurting but they have to ask”

Art Gallery

For our first frame we have focused on still life.
We listened to the poem I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud by William Wordsworth and thought about the shapes and colours we see in daffodils.

  • Draw/paint only what you see

Pysanky Eggs

Primary 1’s Class Assembly

On 24th March, we spoke, sang and danced our hearts out, showcasing all of our knowledge and skills all about our topic The Body. From gymnastics balances to talking about our senses, singing in English and Spanish and dancing at the same time! Well done, Primary 1!

Braille

After learning about our senses, P1 learnt about how people whom have impairments can be supported. From hearing aids for the deaf to wheel chairs for people with movement difficulties.
We created our names using gems to be able to touch what our name would feel like in Braille!

Forensics!

We have been learning about how the police catch criminals. We looked at footprints and fingerprints and how fingerprints are unique to us!

Germs!

We know it is important to wash our hands but this experiment proved why soap is an important step in washing hands – you cannot ‘wash’ your hands with just water!

Edinburgh Science Festival

WOW! We had SO much fun exploring the different activities. We watched some science magic, learnt about renewable energy and created our own wind turbines, and then created cool houses in the imagination playground!
