Scottish Book Week 13th – 17th November

Royal Mile Primary will be taking part in Scottish Book Week (13th – 17th November). We will have fun and exciting activities for the whole school and in the classes during the week and we are hoping that you and your children will be able to join us in our reading week at home.

We will be launching Book Bugs P1 -3 on Friday 17th November and a separate invite will be sent from the class teachers with a time to join the class.

We will have book competitions that the children can take part in and win a book prize. This year we have a Draw Your Favourite Character from a Book competition for Nursery, P1 and P2. We have quizzes for P3-4 and P5-7 and a chance everyday to guess who was caught reading in school. There will be a reading challenge grid on the School classes Blog and we hope that you will help the children complete some of these challenges and send in either the challenge or pictures that we can share their achievements.

Staff will be reading in different classes over the week and sharing their love of reading.

The challenge in class this year is for children to agree a Recipe for Reading in Royal Mile Primary so please discuss with your children at home what they enjoy about reading and what makes them want to read. We will compile all the ideas and use that to encourage more great reading in school.

We are passionate about creating a Royal Mile Primary Reading Community and hope that you can share sometime with your children next week to read with them or even tell them about your favourite book as a child.

LETS GET READING!

Thank you.

Hello everyone!

Thank you for your efforts in homework last week. Homework will continue to be issued on Mondays and is expected back on Thursdays.

Please practice them using activities from the grid below. Pick 2 activities.

Your maths homework is a addition task. You can choose between the mild or spicy option. The sums are written out in formal column addition form (chimney sums) but you can work out the answer by using partitioning, picture jottings, or an empty numberline sketch. We have practised all these methods in class. If you choose to use a chimney sum please remember to show your working!

Primary Five Home Learning Week Commencing 9th October 2023

Spelling- qu

This week’s spelling pattern is the ‘qu’ sound. The words are listed below. To practice the words children should write read the word out loud, break it down to its sounds, cover it over and then try to write the word. Tick it if it is correct, try again if not.

Core Words

quit, quiz, queen, quick, quote, squeal

Mild Words

quench, quality, quiet, squeak

Hot words

squeeze, question, quarter, quiver

You can also try to split the words into its sounds. You can show a single letter making a sound with a dot and a double letter making a sound with a line under both letters.

quiz- qu i z

Maths and Numeracy

Look at the maths trails primary five made last week in class. Create your own maths trail in your home, garden or local environment.

Learning Across the Curriculum

In class this week we have been looking at the poetry of Grace Nichols. The focus has been on onomatopoeia and metaphors. Come up with some metaphors to describe things in your home or local area.

i.e. Arthur’s Seat is a sleeping giant in the middle of the city.
