Mental Agility Second level

Hi and welcome to the second section of our MENTAL AGILITY rainbow this term!

Until Christmas our school will focus on ADDITION and SUBTRACTION!

Please find attached activities children work on in class.

We would really appreciate your support in practising them at home too!

One of our main aims is for children to be competent with numbers.

Pupils are introduced to a new mathematical concept through the use of concrete resources (e.g. fruit, Dienes blocks etc). When they are comfortable solving problems with physical aids, they are given problems with pictures – usually pictorial representations of the concrete objects they were using.

Then they are asked to solve problems where they only have the abstract i.e. numbers or other symbols. Building these steps across a lesson can help pupils better understand the relationship between numbers and the real world, and therefore helps secure their understanding of the mathematical concept they are learning.

Most Second level learners are ready to move on from concrete materials and focus on pictorial and abstract methods. An increasing understanding of number allows transitioning through the approaches.

It is vital to have a variety of strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems.

Here are some examples:

At second level learners will also work with numbers up to/beyond one Million, decimal, percentages and fractions as well as negative numbers:

Good to be back!

Hello everyone,

It was so nice to have most of the class back in this morning. I am so proud of those who took time to complete the home learning tasks. Well done to everyone’s hard work!

Hopefully in the coming week, we will see everyone back into class and we can continue to learn together. Weekly home learning will also be sent home on Monday to be returned on Thursday. It would be much appreciated if parents and carers could support your child/children with this. Many thanks!

Some fantastic sentences with our spelling words.
Great addition skills using a number line.
Lots of research completed for our topic work.

Have a lovely weekend and see you all on Monday!

Home learning Thursday 28th

Hello everyone,

One last day of home learning and we will be back in school again tomorrow morning. Looking forward to seeing everyone and showcasing the work you have done at home these few days.

Today’s work will recap on what we usually do during Soft Start. Challenge yourself to work through the 3 different levels if you can. Get your family involved too. Time yourselves and see who gets the most sums. Get those brains ticking!

A few tasks for you to do for our topic work. I will be all ears to hear all the different European languages spoken in class tomorrow!

Have a good day.
