Welcome to Primary 5

Good afternoon Primary 5 Families!

I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable summer break. It has been good to get to speak to some of you at the end of the day and put faces to name. I am sure in the coming weeks I’ll be able meet and speak to more of you.

We had had a fantastic first week in Primary Five, taking time to re-connect after the break, completing our first piece of writing and discussing our rights and how we can make sure we are all working together to support and protect those rights. We have highlighted four of the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) to focus this year in Primary Five, forming our class charter.

‘I have the right to an education.’ Right 28

‘I have the right to meet with friends and join with groups.’ Right 15

‘I have the right to be protected from being hurt or badly treated.’ Right 19

‘I have the right to relax and play.’ Right 31

Sharing Our Success

Our writing focus this week has been recipe poems. I challenged the learners to create a recipe poem for the ‘perfect teacher’. It was fantastic to see so many learners challenging themselves and having success. Below are just some examples of the learners’ amazing writing.

Take a spoonful of understanding,

Add a few drops of patience,

Mix in a gallon of coffee,

Stir with a sprinkle of happiness.

Fold in a chunk of laughter,

Sprinkle with a drop of kindness,

Finish with a dash of enthusiasm,

And there you have a perfect teacher.

Take a chunk of kindness,

Add a piece of humour,

Mix in a spoon of wonder,

Stir with a drop of courage.

Fold in a tonne of enthusiasm,

Add a sprinkle of love,

Finish with a touch of smiles

And there you have a perfect teacher.

Spelling

This week in spelling we are focusing on words which follow the double the final letter and add ed spelling rule. For example if we use ship as the root word you would add another p and ed to turn it into shipped.

Please write the root word and then the form with the ‘ed’ suffix added.

Practise writing the words using look, say, cover, write, check. Tick the ones you got correct and have another go at the ones you did not get correct.

Core words

chatted, clapped, fitted, patted, popped, rubbed

Mild words

skipped, pinned, slipped, slapped

Hot words

trapped, tripped, wrapped, permitted

Maths and Numeracy

In maths and numeracy we are continuing our work on measure, focusing on measures of length or distance, weight or capacity. For home learning this week I would like you to write down as many different units of measurement you can remember for distance/length, capacity and weight. You could challenge yourself to also include the abbreviations for the units and sort between imperial and metric.

i.e.

Capacity

litres (l)- metric

pints (pt)- imperial

Challenge task

Choose five of your measurements and write the conversation between metric and imperial.

i.e.

1 pint= 568ml.

Learning Across the Curriculum

In class we have been learning about Islam and creating information presentations to share what we have found.

Please choose another world religion and write five facts you have found about it. You could use the examples below as a starting point.

How many people in the world are followers of the religion?

What are the key beliefs?

What traditions do followers of the religion have?
