What a busy time we’ve had! Here are some highlights.
Autumn Scavenger Hunt
We went on a scavenger hunt to find autumn treasure. We brought back items that we were curious about, and shared these in the classroom. Why are the leaves that colour? How does it feel? Is it safe? Where did it come from?
“We were looking for some acorns” Halle “We were looking for some leaves” MJ “The leaves and acorns fell from the tree because of the wind” Viktoriia “The acorn came from an oak tree. When it is small, it is green” Ayat “I found acorns” Dania
Marvellous Mushrooms
Can you identify the cap, stem and gills? Primary 1 can!
Mushrooms in shops are safe to eat.
Mushrooms in forests aren’t safe to eat.
Red spotty mushrooms? Poisonous!
“They have gills underneath the cap” Erin “We made them with dough” Ezra “We rolled a ball with the dough and a sausage” Sasha “We used a pen and made lines to make the gills” Halle “We let them dry and painted them. I used blue and red” Zoa “I painted my ones red and purple and blue” Myles “I did red and dots.” Alya “Red and spotty ones give you very bad stomach ache. They are poisonous” Viktoriia
Block area, small world and loose parts
Pupils have been proudly telling staff they have been working like “Team Bee”, creating amazing construction in the block area, using a variety of ‘loose parts’ to add to their masterpieces. If you think you have any loose parts you can donate to the class, please send them in!
“That is my castle where the humans stay and catch a werewolf” Myles “We made an ark out of wood. It is a boat. We put it in the water and pretend it is floating” Edikan “I made a castle” Sasha “That’s a rocket and you put cars in the rocket and it blasts out and you shoot the monsters” Myles “We were making a castle and the humans had to stay because there were poison mushrooms outside” Halle “We were making a parking lot with different levels. There is a ramp for the cars to get in” Vinnie
Anna Hibiscus’ Song
What do you do when you’re so happy you feel you are going to burst into a million pieces?
Pupils from RMPS were invited by Capital Theatres to watch a performance of the story Anna Hibiscus’ Song. We enjoyed getting up and copying the dance moves to the sound of the African drums!
“We went at the theatre and we did some dancing. There was a story about friendship. The girl was really happy” Vinnie “I liked the music” Dania “I loved the dancing so much and it was so good and Iiked the music and singing” Zoa “I really liked the music and the dancing” Viktoriia “A girl from Africa. She was happy.” Sasha
Edinburgh Evening News Photograph
While having our professional photograph taken, staff managed to snap these photographs on our school iPad of Primary 1 looking smart!
Here are some of the activities we completed for Maths Week Scotland 2024: Maths Tales!
Addition Adventure
We created pictures to tell an addition story.
Subtraction Showdown
We created a game where contestants solve subtraction problems using giant balls! How many did the Big Bad Wolf steal and how many do you have left? Check out those proud smiles!
We’re going on a… NUMBER hunt!
Have a look at these photos we took on a recent hunt around our local area – We found so many different numerals and they all had different purposes. Phone numbers, price tags, clocks, door entry codes. What can you find in your own home?
Goldilocks and the Three Bears
Primary 1 had great fun acting out this story, taking a different part each time! By the end of the week, the pupils were able to tell the story with very little help from staff.
Too hot, too cold or just right?
Pupils enjoyed testing the temperature of the three bowls of water using their senses. We discussed how using a thermometer would give a number reading.
Porridge day!
Pupils followed a recipe and carefully measured out the ingredients for their porridge as an end of week celebration!

Literacy through self-lead learning
Developing fine motor skills, pencil grip, mark making, letter formation and letter sounds.
Reading Folders
Primary 1 read in class on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Pupils take their folder home on Thursdays. Inside the plastic folder is a book, flashcards and reading record. The reading record is for adults to write in to comment or ask questions. Reading folders should be returned to school on Mondays. This gives staff time to change the book over ready for Tuesday’s reading.
Primary 1 will start with wordless picture books. We learn that stories have characters and that they have a beginning, middle and end. Here are some of the characters we will see in our stories.
You can read more stories together at home by signing up to a free Oxford Owl account.
It is important that when you are reading together, you feel that you can talk in whichever language you and your child feels most comfortable in.

Phonics
We are learning how to build words with the letters s,a,t,i,p,n and m. We start by singing the Jolly Phonics songs, making sure that we make the pure sounds (mmm, not muh) then move on to forming the letters. We use Fred Fingers for spelling then we make the words on white boards and magnetic boards. Have a go at home with these online magnetic letters. Can you read and write these words? sat, pin, man, ant, tin, pit, nap.
Writing letters
You may find that your child can make the letter shapes but in a different way. An a, for example, can be drawn as a circle with a tail added afterwards. Although it may have the same outcome, forming the letters as we ask is very important as it will help your child when they start to join letters together.
Try making your letters in lots of different ways; Outside with sticks and flowers, with Lego, with salt, shaving foam, sprinkles, rice, Playdough, sand…
Thank you for taking the time to engage with what Primary 1 has been learning. You are welcome to reply to this post with questions or messages to say Hello!
