Dear Primary 7,

To help you with your transition tasks, I have made an example one of how I probably felt when I was going into S1. As some of you may know, my family moved to Germany when I was 11. I started the first year of high school in Braunschweig, Niedersachsen, Deutschland. A new country, new language and new school all in one!

What are you nervous about?	What are you excited about?
I don’t speak the language. I won’t understand anything in class. The school is huge-there are over 1000 people! Not knowing where to go.   The teachers might get cross with me because I don’t understand. I won’t be able to do the work.	Getting back to school Being in the same school as my sister. The hot chocolate machine! Being the best in the English class! I can go to the shop at lunch time. Making new friends. Learning lots of new subjects.

Now, I understand that every experience is different. When I look at this list now, I can tell you a few things. I never did get lost because I went with my class everywhere. I did find other students who spoke English and loved to practise their English so they spoke to me and helped me.

I won’t fib and tell you I managed to learn well in another language straight away, I absolutely did not! That was probably the hardest part, because when you are learning in a language that is not your own, you have to concentrate so much harder. It took me some time and a lot of help from my parents and some really patient teachers, but as my German got better, I was able to understand and do better in school. Some of my teachers did get cross with me but others tried so hard to help me to understand. My sister went back to visit the school as an adult and her Biology teacher told her that he had ordered books in English off the internet when she was in his class, so that he could help her.

There was also lots of things to be excited about that I hadn’t thought of. For example, after about 6 months or so, I could travel home on my own (it was two bus journeys away). This meant I could go home via the shop in the village for a ‘Buntetüte’ which is a pick n mix! We also went on an amazing class trip (one of the days we went to a theme park!) and I started piano lessons close by.

So I know it can feel like a huge change now but in a couple of months, it will all feel second nature to you. Teachers are less cross than mine were (trust me!) and they really want to help you. Also, in high school there are so many departments that specialise in their own subject, so you will learn and experience so many new things!
