P5 News and Home Learning w/b 27th March

It was lovely to see and share the learning and achievements of Primary 5 with parents last week. It was also a sad week in Primary 5 as Mr Humphreys finished his Placement with us and returned to University on Monday 27th March. The class and staff wish him all the best and thank him for his fabulous contribution to Primary 5 that he made in his time with us.

Swimming took place on Monday 27th March and we will have another session on Monday 17th April the day we return from our Easter Break. I will let you know if there are any further sessions after this but the class have demonstrated an improvement in their skills and are progressing well in the water.

This week is a busy week and we will be visiting the Science Festival at the City Art Centre Tuesday 28th March where we will be taking part in three active workshops. On Friday we will taking part in our Houses in the Parent Council’s Easter Egg Hunt. Friday 31st March will also see us start our April Holidays and I would like to wish every one in class a Happy Easter and a Happy Ramadan.

This week I will not be issuing Home Learning as we have a busy Friday of activities that will not allow us to do self correction and discussion. After the holidays Home Learning will consist of maths, reading comprehension and spelling. Spelling will be the patterns that the groups are learning during the week and the Home Learning will be a challenge that the class are familiar with. Once again thank you for all your support in making Home Learning a shared experience.

P5 News and Home Learning w/b 20th March.

We had been very busy in P5 last week celebrating and undertaking experiments in class for Science Week. On Monday we looked at the Phases of the Moon, Tuesday we started to conduct our Mouldy Bread Experiment which we used to write instructions for and to predict what we thought would happen when using hard and liquid soaps to sanitise our hands before touching the bread. We will be returning to look at the results this week. We also investigated the connection between flowers and water by dying the water different colours and we have watched over the week the carnations slowly change colours. On Monday we had launch assembly for Science Week with Generation Science all about the body, heart, lungs, digestion, blood circulation and whole host of other areas of the body that help us function. In PE P5 have been learning Badminton skills with Mr Madine and Mr Humphreys.

This week we have swimming on Monday at Abbeyhill, please remember swimming hat, costume and towel and Ukulele with Malcolm on Monday morning. This will Mr Humphrey’s last week with us so we plan to pack lots of outdoor work and art into the week.

I have attached below a copy of the home learning for week beginning 20th March which will be sent home on Monday to be returned on Friday for self correction and discussion.

CONGRATULATIONS TO PRIMARY 5!

Primary 5 took part in the Social Enterprise Academy Dragon’s Den Competition on Thursday 2nd March at Morningside. They took on other Primary 6 and 7 classes from Primaries across Lothians and Borders and won!

The Dragons were from local Businesses who support and have developed Social Enterprise Businesses themselves. They were ‘blown away’ ( their words) by the level and commitment of the class to their idea and were impressed by their presentation and how they answered the questions that they were asked. However what stood out most about their idea and the work they were doing was their passion about the community they live in and how their idea could support the people around them from families in the school to those in the local community.

The class worked as a team from poster making, to creating logos, to supporting the presenters on the day, creating powerpoint for the presentation and throughout the process of writing the pitch, to some of the class presenting the pitch, all the children had a role to play and succeeded in winning £200 for their enterprise. We will now be starting to build our business and hope to launch it to the families in school in June at a special event.

Mrs Leslie and Mr Humphreys are so proud of being part of your team and were so impressed on the day with how you all worked together as a winning combination. Well done Primary 5!

Please remember that we have swimming on Monday at Abbeyhill Primary and Music with Youth Music Initiative. On Tuesday we have Magic Torch Comics coming to give us an all day workshop on producing a comic based on our social enterprise story and idea.

Home Learning will be issued on Monday and please return on Friday for self correction and discussion. The class are really doing well returning their home learning and supporting each other when they are discussing what they have done. Please have a go at home to complete it even if you find it difficult then we can discuss it together in class. Thank you once again for your support.

P5 News and Home Learning w/b 28.02.23

Can you believe that we are already two months into 2023 and this week we begin our swimming block at Abbeyhill Primary School, please remember your swimming cap, swimming wear and towel. We are also going to do our Dragon’s Den pitch on Thursday 2nd March and we have been preparing all last week for our presentation. We have produced a power point about our Enterprise , the pitch, a logo and posters to take with us to deliver our ideas. We had a visit during the week from the Social Enterprise Academy team and they took pictures and interviewed some of the class to produce an article for the Big Issue about our plan. I will let you know when the article is to be published.
