P1 Money Sense

Do you use cash?

We are moving towards a becoming cashless society. More pupils in Primary 1 have seen their grown ups use a mobile phone to pay compared to using coins!

“I am developing my awareness of how money is used and can recognise and use a range of coins. MNU 0-09a”

We will be supporting your child to…

  • Identify all coins to £2.
  • Apply addition and subtraction skills and use 1p, 2p, 5p and 10p coins to pay the exact value for items to 10p.

To start our topic, we opened with 3 questions

We have been sorting and matching coins

  • By colour – Gold, Silver, Bronze
  • By shape – Circle, Heptagon, Dodecagon
  • By size – Smallest to biggest
  • By value – lowest value to highest value

To understand that each coin has a different worth, we have been playing with dot cards – combining cards with different dot amounts to pay for an item.

P1 – upcoming events

Thursday 8th June – Sports Day

Please see email from Mrs Henry, sent on Friday 2nd June.

We welcome parents and family members to join our 3-legged race.

Please have a chat with your child about if you can/cannot come. This is really helpful as it supports their emotional regulation on the day.

Pupils have been encouraged to wear a top/ jumper of their team. This is not compulsory however helps add to the team feel. Below are their colours.

Friday 16th June – School Fair

Run by the parent council after school, this should be an afternoon of games, stalls and fun! Parents must collect children as normal and accompany them during their time there. Enjoy!

Tuesday 20th June – Class trip to Museum on the Mound

As a conclusion to their money topic, primary 1 will visit the Museum on the Mound. This will be a hands on morning, handling and creating money, learning ways that it has been kept safe in the past and seeing one million pound in real life!

Shop – The museum also has a gift shop, all profits from which go to charity. If you would like your child to use the shop, we have many ‘pocket-money’ items under £2.00; pens, pencils, rulers, key rings, postcards and replica coins.

A maximum amount of £2 will be allowed on this trip per child as not to spend too long in the shop! Staff will do their best however we kindly remind you that pupils are ultimately responsible for their money.

Thursday 22nd June – Class trip to East Links Family Park

On this day, primary 1 will be travelling by coach to East Links FP for their end of year trip. Click the link to see what fun experiences they might have together!

P1 – Dinosaur Finale

Palaeontology Practise

We had to be very gentle so we didn’t break the fossils or bones

After learning about fossils, we had a go at making our own! Bones, ammonites (ammonoidea) and dinosaur footprints.

Dinosaur Diets

We dissected dinosaur poo

– if we found only plants, it was from a herbivore

– if we found only bones and feathers, it was a carnivore

– if we found a mixture of both, it was an omnivore!

Trip to the National Museum of Scotland – following the Discovering Dinosaurs! Trail

If you wish to follow it again, click the link here! or choose a new trail to follow.

Treasure Hunt

While on a journey to find things that are living, once lived and never lived, we found some clues that took us on a treasure hunt around our local area that ended with a big pot of gold!
