Spelling
In the next few weeks in spelling we will be focusing on irregular plural forms of plurals. This week we will look at words which end in ‘f’. The rule is the ‘f’ is removed and ‘ves’ is then added to the end of the word.
e.g. leaf- leaves
There are some exceptions though, like words which end with a ‘ff’, which just have a ‘s’ added on.
e.g. cliff- cliffs

Mild words
loaf- loaves

Maths and Numeracy
This week in numeracy the focus will be on money. Learners should choose five items they would like to buy. This could be anything from a pencil case to a new games console. They should choose three different retailers and show the price from them then underline which one they would buy from.
Children should be wary of hidden costs or savings associated with different buying options i.e. money off, delivery costs etc.
Learning Across the Curriculum
Choose one character from the Spiderwick Chronicles or Matilda and create a character fact file. Your fact file should include, their name, a picture of them and at least five facts.
Spelling
This week the spelling pattern is using the suffix ‘ily’ to create adverbs. The rule is if a word ends in a y and you want to turn it into an adverb you drop the y and then add on ‘ily’. So happy becomes happily.

This week we will continue to focus on subtraction skills in numeracy. Please choose one activity from the PACE grid below.

Avery belated Happy New Year to all Primary 5 families. I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable break. It has been fantastic welcoming back all of the Primary 5 learners and am looking forward to sharing our learning this term.
As previously, home learning is set on a Monday and supplements the in class learning children complete. Home learning should be completed in the home learning jotter and returned on a Thursday.
Spelling
This week in class we will be focusing on the ‘ai’ sound. Your child will learn the ‘core words’ as well as either the ‘mild’ or ‘hot’ words. You can practice spelling words using the look, cover, say, write, check approach as well as breaking down words to their sound.
Core words: repair, raise, curtain, afraid, bargain, obtain
Mild words: despair, Britain, certain, praise
Hot words: straight, mountain, fountain, traipse
Maths and Numeracy
This week and the previous week we have been focusing on short division. Learners have had the opportunity to create videos or posters explaining how to use the short division or ‘bus stop’ method. Please choose the appropriate level of challenge from the PACE grid below and write the problem, solution and workings in the home learning jotter.

Choose the top five things to see or places to go within a 30 minute walk of school. What can you do there? Why would people want to go? Who would enjoy it most (is it for adults or children?).
It doesn’t have to be famous or tourist attractions. You could choose a local park, shop you like or even a friends house, as long as you can explain why.

Write out numbers which are divisible by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. What clues can you use to spot if a number will be divisible by each specific number i.e. numbers divisible by 2 will all be even.
Learning Across the Curriculum
Create a visual food chain for an environment you find interesting. You could draw the animals, you could model them or even make a short explanation film. You should use the terms producer, energy, primary and secondary consumers in you explanation.
