P3 News and Home Learning w/b 22nd April

Welcome back and I hope that you had a lovely break and we are already a week into the final term. Last week, in Literacy, we worked on revisiting our sounds that we have been learning this year. Over the next few weeks we will be revisiting all our sounds and spelling patterns, along with our common words. In Maths we will be looking at Number Recognition on the mental maths strategies rainbow, Ms Brunner has already uploaded to this page maths challenges for you try at home. I will send out these challenges as activities for home learning with examples to support your understanding. We will also be looking at measure, mathematical symbols and data handling in the next few weeks.

We will be sending out an overview of this term’s work in the next few weeks but our topic this term will be Farm to Fork and the class will be looking at where their food comes from and what food is farmed in Scotland. The class has already decided that they would like a farmer to visit and I am in the process of trying to arrange this, watch this space! We will be visiting the library next Monday, 29th April and I would be very grateful if the children who had borrowed books from the library brought them to school to return them.

The class has another few weeks of NYCOS for music and this will happen every Tuesday morning. PE will be Tuesday and Thursday this term, please send in a change of clothes for PE as the weather is now getting warmer. We will also be taking our learning outside and with this in mind please bring a coat to school as rain can catch us out.

Home Learning is beginning again this week and will be sent out in the Home Learning bags on Monday to be returned on Friday. Mr McPheely would still like to hear about achievements that children have undertaken out of school as he is gathering this information for a lovely display in the school. Home learning this week is a spelling challenge sheet, mental maths strategies activity sheet and a book to read for pleasure, if previous books have been returned. I will send out an other curriculum grid challenge sheet next week when we have discussed the first part of our topic.

This week we have been looking further at our topic, Japan and we decorated Japanese bowls and looked at the traditional design of cherry tree blossom, painting Cherry Blossom Scrolls and researching the Japanese version of the children’s names. We also got a chance to practice our chopstick skills and we are going to create instruction videos to help other people learn this skill. This week we will be looking at Pokémon and Manga Art in our topic and will be creating posters about our favourite Pokémon or even creating some new ones.

In maths we looked at money and what we could afford from different amounts. We also continued to look at fractions, decorating our pizzas to half and quarter. In writing we undertook our writing assessment based on a recount of our trip to the library.

P3 News and Home Learning

In Primary 3 this week we had a visit from Generation Science, who showed us how to programme a Lego Robot to play football and score goals. The class used their coding skills to programme their robots to shot and score balls into the Lego nets. We also visited the Children’s Library this week to look for books for our Japanese topic. Miss S and I were very impressed with the Topic Challenge Grid homework that the children had brought back to school. We have decided to create a display in the classroom of all the brilliant drawings, recipes and Spanish words that that have been brought to school.

This week home learning will be issued on Monday and should be returned on Friday. In the Home Learning bag will be a book to read for pleasure, if a book has been returned, weekly spelling words with challenges, maths challenge sheet (numbers before and after) and the children have already a copy of the Topic Challenge Grid.

P3 News and Home Learning w/b 26 February

We had a great week, last week in P3 with lots happening and we are looking forward to another exciting and busy week ahead. On Mondays, Ms Brunner and P3 have been looking at money and recognising coins and change from various amounts. On Wednesday and Thursday we started looking at fractions, whole, halves, quarters and thirds using different cakes that we divided in to pieces to represent the different fractions, it was all a bit sticky but very sweet.

P3 spent time last week working on what Respect looks like in school, the community and what Respect means to them. We will be displaying these messages throughout the school and in the classroom to reminds how important respect is in our school. P3 also made a decision on their next topic and they were asked to vote on a country that they wished to research and compare to Scotland. They had to vote between Japan, Mexico and New Zealand and they voted for…

We will be looking at the country and its traditions, food and features. P3 will research these areas and then compare them to Scotland.

Home Learning this week will be issued on Monday in the home learning bags and should be returned on Friday. This week in the bag will be Spelling words, a book to read for pleasure, Maths challenge sheet and a home learning topic grid. In our mental maths strategies we are moving to the orange band on our rainbow, numbers before and after. I have provided three of the challenges with examples to support learning at home and Ms Brunner has provided further strategies on the blog. The home learning topic grid is based on one of the countries that P3 had voted on, Mexico and although Japan won the vote some of the class had expressed an interest in looking at Mexico. I hope that they enjoy the challenges. I would like to remind you to provide your child with in a PE kit and PE shoes to change into for their PE sessions Tuesday and Thursday. Can I also request that no toys are bought into school as this can cause upset in the classroom and distract from the children’s learning.
